Focus on the Point, Not the Pointer

I think one of the main problems with placing the emphasis on seeing and performing signs and wonders now instead of pursuing knowledge and admonition of the Lord through scripture is the discontentment and impatience that comes when they don’t happen. More often than not, I’ve seen people who are desperate to see miracles happen end up manufacturing things. This is also the lure that many abhorrent movements use to snare people who have that inclination and take their money and obscure the gospel.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I believe God does still move in miraculous ways (I believe I’ve seen it happen in my lifetime), but we have to be sure we’re rooting our faith in Christ and what has been written of Him rather than needing to see things happen now. Scripture has been written so that we may believe! It’s not secondary, it’s not less-than, and it’s not insufficient. It’s FULLY sufficient - to the point where we don’t actually need to see any miracles today aside from a dead soul’s eyes being opened to the truth. Anything given to us outside of that is grace, and even those must be qualified, defined, and beholden to God’s Word.

Desiring for God to move is not a bad thing, but it can become a major distraction, and even become idolatry if not fully submitted to the authority of scripture. Scripture ends up becoming secondary and subordinate to these manufactured signs, and what a devastating mixup that is!

Signs point. They’re not THE point!
